At dawn on this Thursday, the value of foreign currencies in the informal Cuban market remains stable, according to the independent media elToque, based on monitoring announcements on social media.
The dollar holds steady at 340 CUP, a price it reached on January 11. The U.S. currency has now remained unchanged for 12 days.
The euro is also stable today, after suddenly dropping five units this Wednesday, the European currency remains today at 340 CUP, the same as the dollar.
In the case of the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), it continues to be valued at 240 CUP. It has now been at this value for ten days.
Overall, the three benchmark currencies have shown a trend towards stability during this second half of January.
Exchange Rate Evolution
However, the recent arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States and the measures he may take in relation to Cuba could impose changes very soon on the evolution and trend of the informal currency market on the island.
Regarding this, in recent hours, a false statement went viral on social media attributed to the Trump administration, announcing an alleged package of measures that included the suspension of remittances and direct commercial flights to Cuba.
It also included travel restrictions for Cubans residing in the U.S., and the deportation of Cuban citizens with deportation orders or with ties to the repressive and ideological apparatus of the Cuban regime. Although this statement is fundamentally false, the reality is that the tension regarding what may happen in the coming days persists.
