A bus from the Transmetro company, transporting tourism workers, was involved in an accident on Monday afternoon on the road to Turiguanó in Ciego de Ávila, with no injuries reported, according to preliminary reports.
The Yutong bus only suffered material damage after one of its tires burst and it collided with a pole, according to reports from users in Facebook posts. Employees from the tourist facilities located in the Jardines del Rey Archipelago were traveling in the vehicle.
The incident occurred on the same road where weeks earlier a tragic accident claimed the lives of seven people and injured nearly 60 others. On January 20, a head-on collision occurred between two buses transporting tourism workers on the route connecting Morón to the Island of Turiguanó, for which the driver of one of the vehicles was held responsible, according to authorities' findings.
This Monday, around two in the afternoon, another accident on that road startled the occupants of the involved bus, but everyone emerged unscathed.
Daniel Castro reported this in several Facebook groups: “Fortunately, nothing serious happened,” he stated.
The photos that were posted show the broken glass from the windshield, the door, and the windows of the bus.
Workers traveling in the vehicle and relatives of some of them confirmed that "nothing happened to the people," and the bus only suffered material damage.
In light of comments regarding the driver's responsibility in the incident and speculation about whether he was speeding, several defended the driver.
"When an event like this happens, we always look for someone to blame. In this case, the most vulnerable is the driver, and we judge and comment without knowing the full story. The driver in the accident was not drinking, he wasn't speeding, and he has a lot of experience. Thanks to him, our work group at Hotel Sol Coco, from 3 to 11, is safe; had it been different, I believe we wouldn't be telling this story," emphasized an employee from the tourist area.
"What happened was a tire explosion, and when this occurred, the bus lost control. This is an excellent worker, and such incidents can happen to anyone behind the wheel; please, before commenting, first refer to the accurate account of what took place," warned a Transmetro employee.
Many agreed with her version, holding the authorities responsible for the neglect of the vehicle fleet. "In this case, the driver can't be blamed; they simply have to improve the buses used to transport workers, because those buses are running thanks to the drivers, and it was due to a blown tire. Now the poor driver has to buy a tire that costs up to 30,000 pesos because no one takes care of that," argued another woman.
The initial weeks of 2025 have left a trail of numerous accidents on the country's roads, many of which have had fatal outcomes.
In addition to the accident in Ciego de Ávila, another tragic incident was reported in Holguín during the first month of the year. Six family members died after the driver of the car they were traveling in lost control and crashed into a large metal pipe on a road in the municipality of Mayarí.
At the beginning of this month, a couple lost their lives when their car collided with a horse-drawn carriage on the Central Highway in Ciego de Ávila.
According to official statistics, in 2024 there was a decrease in the number of traffic incidents, as well as in the figures for fatalities and injuries compared to the previous year.
In total, there were 7,507 accidents, 634 deaths, and 6,613 injuries, indicators that were lower than those of 2023, according to the Specialized Traffic Body of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).
Authorities continue to point to driver responsibility as the main cause of accidents in the country.
