Jorge Luis Rodríguez Calero, affectionately known as "Jorgito", an 18-month-old boy from the municipality of Jatibonico, is recovering well after facing a severe pneumonia complicated by pleural effusion that kept him in critical condition for several weeks at the "José Martí Pérez" Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Sancti Spíritus.
According to Dr. Joan Manuel Varela Rodríguez, a specialist in Pediatric Surgery, speaking to the official broadcaster Radio Sancti Spíritus, the child was initially admitted with a severe case of complicated bilateral pneumonia due to pleural effusion and pneumothorax in both lungs.
The condition was so critical that Jorgito required three surgical interventions, the first one performed on December 26 and the subsequent ones, including one on New Year's Eve, to address the complications that arose.
The right lung turned out to be the most affected, to the point that the posibilidad of removing it was even considered due to the severe lung damage.
However, the medical team decided to give this organ a chance, performing multiple procedures to drain the accumulated fluid and repair fistulas that severely compromised its respiratory function.
During his prolonged hospitalization of 46 days, Jorgito received intensive therapy with specific antibiotics aimed at combating aggressive infections, particularly from staphylococcus, a bacteria that is especially harmful to the lungs.
The specialists used various medications, including vancomycin, meropenem, and colistin, among others, to stabilize and ultimately reverse his condition, the doctor reported.
Dr. Elizabet García Gallo, a specialist in Pediatrics and a graduate in Pediatric Intensive Care, highlighted the complexity of the case and the important role that multidisciplinary care played in saving the child's life.
Health authorities took this case to remind families of the importance of seeking medical services early when experiencing persistent respiratory symptoms, especially in young children due to the natural vulnerability of their immature respiratory system.
The Provincial Pediatric Hospital "José Martí Pérez" in Sancti Spíritus has faced various cases and situations so far this year that reflect health challenges for the institution.
In January, a medical team from the hospital successfully saved the life of a four-year-old boy who had accidentally inhaled a metallic piece from a watch, which became lodged in his right lung.
The intervention was complex because the minor had acute laryngitis, but the piece was successfully extracted on the first attempt.
The following month, the hospital was embroiled in controversy due to the death of a baby diagnosed with methylmalonic aciduria, a rare metabolic disorder.
While the medical center stated that the condition was "incompatible with life", the child's mother reported medical negligence, questioning the administration of the pentavalent vaccine without the necessary prior clinical tests and an inadequate diet for her son's condition.
Recently, they addressed the case of an 11-month-old baby who was thrown from a fourth floor in Jatibonico, who has shown satisfactory progress and is no longer in danger of losing her life.
