A serious traffic accident that occurred on March 20 in Villa Clara has left two Cuban doctors, a man and a woman, with severe injuries.

It so happens that one of the injured is Dr. Nelson Alejandro Agramonte Quevedo, a prominent chess player from the Cuban Postal Chess Federation, who had recently qualified for the preliminaries of the 49th edition of the World Chess Championship in that modality.

Almost two weeks after the incident, the authorities have not issued any official statements nor provided support to those affected, according to complaints made public by the sports website Swing Completo based on the testimony of a source close to the victims.

A silenced accident

The accident occurred at 8:20 a.m. on the road connecting Sagua La Grande with Quemado de Güines, less than a kilometer from the "9 de Abril" Hospital.

The affected individuals, Dr. Agramonte (35 years old, otorhinolaryngologist) and Dr. Amalia González Viera (27 years old, rheumatologist), were traveling in a state vehicle from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) heading to the municipality of Corralillo to carry out community work when the car overturned.

Both sustained serious injuries: Dr. Agramonte suffered a spinal fracture, while Dr. González has a fracture in her pelvis.

A source close to the case informed Swing Completo that, after the accident, “both are currently bedridden,” and that there has been no news regarding the incident in official press outlets.

International chess player

Dr. Agramonte not only stands out for his medical work but also for his achievements in correspondence chess.

He is an active member of the Cuban Federation of Postal Chess and frequently participates in online tournaments.

Additionally, he had recently qualified for the preliminary rounds of the 49th edition of the Correspondence Chess World Championship, which demonstrates his commitment and competitive level in this sport.

"I wish to expose the corruption."

The report was received anonymously through a direct source who chose to break the silence.

"I want to find ways to uncover all the corruption involved in this," he stated.

“There are two injured doctors, and it seems like nothing has happened. This incident needs to be made public. Why so much silence?”, he added with indignation.

The name of the driver of the crashed vehicle would be Yuri Espinosa, a former agent of the National Revolutionary Police.

According to the source, he remains at liberty, with a valid driver's license and not facing any legal proceedings.

There would also have been no examination of the car, nor were the injuries officially documented in Forensic Medicine.

In addition, it is claimed that the government vehicle did not have the approved technical inspection, known in Cuba as “Somatón”, and that after the accident, access to the trunk of the car was denied, which could indicate irregularities or a cover-up.

Institutional neglect and without an ambulance

According to the information received, neither MINSAP nor other government entities have provided assistance to the injured doctors.

Dr. Nelson requires a Taylor-type orthopedic corset to stabilize his spine, but it is not manufactured on the island due to a shortage of materials.

Dr. Amalia is still undergoing anticoagulant treatment with heparin to prevent complications.

The source indicated that there was no ambulance for the initial transfer to the hospital or for the return of the injured doctors to their homes.

This omission reveals a deep neglect on the part of health authorities, despite the fact that the victims are active professionals in the Cuban healthcare system who were injured while working.
