The Cuban regime has resurrected the very ghost of indoctrination with the relaunch of the Central Palace of Pioneers “Ernesto Che Guevara”, an emblematic institution from the Soviet era on the island, designed from the ground up to instill communist ideology in children from an early age.
Located in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality, within Parque Lenin, this center was for decades a key hub of the ideological apparatus of Castroism, where entire generations were trained under the motto of being “like Che,” echoing revolutionary slogans amidst science workshops, military explorations, and carefully monitored “recreational” activities.
UN ACTO DE PROPAGANDA CON OLOR A PASADO
On April 4th, coinciding with the 64th anniversary of the founding of the José Martí Pioneer Organization (OPJM), the Palace reopened its doors. The official account of the Presidency of Cuba described the day as "a celebration of emotions," in an event that featured images of Fidel Castro surrounded by children, songs, games, and a fitting touch of revolutionary nostalgia.
The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel toured the facility accompanied by the Minister of Education, Naima Trujillo, who explained to him the Comprehensive Care Program for the Central Palace of Pioneers, an ideological roadmap aimed at training future generations under the strict mold of the Communist Party.
During his visit, the leader even participated in an internal television segment at the Palace, where a young pioneer asked him: “What do you think of our vocational area?”. Díaz-Canel replied that the future is challenging and is in the hands of children, reaffirming that, amidst the economic collapse and youth exodus, the regime continues to bet on instilling its ideology in the new generations as its last lifeline of legitimacy.
DISGUISED INDOCTRINATION OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING
The propaganda machine did not stop there. The Cuban Ministry of Industries celebrated on social media the reopening of its area within the Palace, declaring that it is “ready and beautified” to promote vocational training for children and adolescents, through interest circles linked to industrial activities. A sophisticated way to camouflage indoctrination under the guise of professional guidance.
For its part, the UJC announced the return of the center with great fanfare, emphasizing that the new vocational course will be “tailored to the interests of our children and adolescents”. However, these “interests” seem to be designed from the upper echelons of the Party rather than from children's spontaneous inclinations.
Even before the inauguration, the First Secretary of the UJC in Havana, Raúl Palmero, shared on social media images of the volunteer work done at the facility: "Sunday of volunteer work from the Central Palace of Pioneers. This beautiful facility founded by #Fidel will reopen its doors on April 4th," he wrote, highlighting the meticulous coordination behind the reopening.
UNA BURBUJA EN MEDIO DEL DESASTRE
What the official cameras and government tweets do not show is the true state of the surroundings of the Palace, located in the heart of the Lenin Park complex, an area that has been suffering from neglect, desolation, and structural deterioration for years.
Recent images and reports have shown pathways overgrown with weeds, rusted facilities, collapsed roofs, and empty pavilions that were once a symbol of "socialist leisure." Today, that heartbreaking postcard contrasts sharply with the temporary touch-ups applied to the Palace for the event on April 4th.
While authorities insist that "everything is ready and beautified", the reality is that the reopening was a carefully choreographed spectacle.
In December 2024, the Cuban regime declared that one of its key priorities for 2025 would be “the strengthening of political and ideological work with an emphasis on children, adolescents, and youth.” The Palace, with its symbolically charged name —Ernesto Che Guevara—, is now the flagship of that plan.
Far from focusing on improving the living conditions of the population or addressing the serious migration crisis, the Government has decided to intensify efforts in the emotional and political manipulation of new generations. According to that official strategy, “education in patriotic values” and the expansion of “vocational and ideological training” spaces are prioritized.
Therefore, the return of the Central Palace of Pioneers is not the result of spontaneity or revolutionary nostalgia, but rather a cornerstone in the architecture of systematic indoctrination. Instead of investing in the real modernization of education, the regime seeks to ideologically shield young people from discontent, social media, mass emigration, and growing citizen disenchantment.
