Weekend without surprises: The informal exchange rate in Cuba remains stable

The informal exchange rate in Cuba remains stable this weekend, providing "a breather" amid economic uncertainty and high demand for foreign currency.

The informal exchange rate in Cuba opened this Sunday, April 6, without significant variations, following several days of notable movements in the black market.

According to the monitoring conducted by elTOQUE, the US dollar remains at 360 Cuban pesos (CUP), the euro at 365 CUP, and the Convertible Currency (MLC) at 270 CUP.

Exchange rate in Cuba Sunday, April 6, 2025 - 07:00

  • Exchange rate of the dollar (USD) to Cuban pesos CUP: 360 CUP
  • Exchange rate of the euro (EUR) to Cuban pesos CUP: 365 CUP
  • Exchange rate from (MLC) to Cuban pesos CUP: 270 CUP

This stability marks a pause in the recent upward trend of the dollar, which had recorded three consecutive days of increases until last Friday.

Although the U.S. dollar has not continued its rise over the weekend, current values confirm that it is still trading at high levels against the Cuban peso, reflecting widespread distrust in the national currency and the high demand for foreign exchange to meet basic needs.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The euro, for its part, is also holding steady at 365 CUP. Although in recent days the median of the offers suggested a possible increase, this Sunday the European currency shows no changes. The MLC, on the other hand, continues its downward trend, set today at 270 CUP, five pesos less than at the beginning of the week.

This respite in volatility comes amidst an economic uncertainty, where most Cubans rely on these informal rates to determine their actual purchasing power.

The scarcity of basic goods and persistent inflation make the black market a key indicator for citizens looking to protect their income against the ongoing devaluation of the CUP.

The upcoming days will be crucial to confirm whether this stability marks the beginning of a sustained trend or if, on the contrary, it is merely a temporary pause amid a volatile and changing landscape.
