A Cuban shows his food on an ordinary day on the island: "Right now this is a luxury."

A TikTok video shows daily meals in Cuba, reflecting the economic crisis. Rice with impurities, strained peas, and meat with potatoes, considered a luxury, illustrate the difficult food reality.

A Cuban resident on the island has shown on TikTok what he has to eat in a typical day amidst the economic and food crisis the country is experiencing.

User @reiniercruz88 shared a short video in which he gives a tour of his kitchen and casually shows the food he has been able to prepare. The menu, though modest, reflects the daily challenges many Cuban families face in bringing something to the table.

"This is the rice; yes, it has debris, that's very normal, don't be alarmed," he says as he uncovers a pot. Then he shows another pot with strained peas: "This pot has peeled peas," he comments.

Finally, he shows a third "veteran" pot, as he calls it, containing a dish he considers a luxury: “This pot, which is a veteran in my home, has meat with potato, which right now is a luxury.”

It also shows a container with chopped tomatoes: "Chop the tomatoes as you'd like because even the knives aren't sharp," he adds with a laugh.

The video, which has sparked empathy and comments from Cubans both on and off the island, starkly and unadorned illustrates the daily reality of those living in Cuba under an economic system that does not guarantee the basic food security of the population.

Many users on social media have praised the sincerity of the video and the dignity with which this Cuban showcases his eating routine. Others have lamented the precariousness reflected in his words and cooking utensils.

Beef and pork, as well as fresh vegetables, have become unattainable products for a large portion of the population due to rampant inflation, product shortages, and low wages in local currency.

The content of this video, beyond being anecdotal, is a faithful snapshot of the daily life in many homes in Cuba, where every meal requires creativity, effort, and, above all, resignation.
