Jan Carlos Núñez García, a young resident of Havana, has set a national record by running 160 kilometers between Guanabo and Varadero, adding to a marathon he ran in the latter location.

The feat was completed on March 29, according to official media. The 25-year-old ultramarathon runner, a cook by profession, started the race at 4:00 PM that day to arrive on time for the VI Edition of the Varadero Marathon, which took place on March 30.

"The route came about because I wanted to do something big for the Varadero marathon. That idea had been brewing for a while, so one day I got up and decided to do it. I liked that route along the entire coastline. I don't think there's any other explanation. What I really wanted was to complete the 160 kilometers. The distance was a concern for me, no matter how far I got," he said about his journey.

The most difficult stretch, he confessed, was in the kilometers near the city of Matanzas. From there, the remaining 40 kilometers to Varadero were "a total nightmare": "I was already walking with wet shoes, fatigue at a very high level and then I felt a bit frustrated, because I was surpassing the one hundred kilometers barrier and that felt like an endless wall."

The key to not giving up was setting the goal of completing short sections. The race unfolded between effort and tears from exhaustion.

"I ran many kilometers crying, but not because I couldn't take it anymore; rather, it was to release stress, and that really helped me," he said.

After completing the goal, I intend to participate in international events and run across all of Cuba: "I aspire to travel the Island from Cabo de San Antonio to Punta de Maisí. I believe it would be proof that I am ready for a much bigger event. I think it would be my final training."

His training was joined by his teammate July Peláez Díaz and Olympic silver medalist Rodolfo Falcón, who helped him refine his technique.
