Forest fire in Pinar del Río remains uncontrolled: Over 1,200 hectares affected

In addition to the main fire in Minas de Matahambre, other fires have been reported in the municipalities of Consolación del Sur and Pinar del Río.

The situation in Pinar del Río is becoming increasingly complicated with the progression of a forest fire that remains out of control and is already affecting around 1,200 hectares of pine forests in the Arenales area, within the municipality of Minas de Matahambre.

Although there are more than a hundred brigadists and specialized teams deployed on the ground, the spread of the fire could not be contained due to adverse climatic factors such as the intense drought and winds of up to 40 km/h, which promote the expansion of the flames.

Yury Hernández Reinoso, a specialist at the Forest Ranger command post in the province, informed Radio Guamá that, in addition to this event, they are also managing other minor fires in the municipalities of Consolación del Sur and Pinar del Río.

However, the situation remains critical, as the conditions to contain the fire are extremely unfavorable.

Pinar del Río, which is the second province with the highest forest cover in the country, has faced a significant increase in wildfires in recent days.

This increase in the number of fire hotspots has surpassed the figures reported for the same period last year, raising concerns among authorities and the public.

The impact of the drought and the winds

The high temperatures and the lack of prolonged rains, which have already exceeded 90 days, are key factors in the rapid spread of the fires.

Intense winds further complicate the control of the flames, which are rapidly spreading through the vast forested areas of the region.

The area of Minas de Matahambre, particularly the Arenal zone, has been one of the most affected, with more than 200 hectares of forest consumed by fire in the last 48 hours.

Despite the scale of the disaster, authorities assure that the fire has not posed an immediate danger to nearby communities like Mantua, where, despite the proximity of the blaze, it has not been necessary to evacuate the population.

However, the images and reports from recent days reflect an increasingly alarming reality.

The municipality of San Juan y Martínez, in the same province, has also witnessed how the fire has devastated over 300 hectares of the forested area of La Vigía, describing it as the most complex fire of the year in Cuba.

Concern is growing over environmental impact

The environmental damage caused by these fires is incalculable. The pine forests of Pinar del Río are a valuable natural resource not only for the province but for the entire country, and their destruction jeopardizes local biodiversity and the protection of water resources.

Firefighters use mechanized tools and tanker trucks, but the speed at which the flames spread highlights the lack of preparedness for events of this magnitude.

The drought in recent months has turned the land into a powder keg, easily susceptible to any spark.

Urgent call for prevention

In the midst of the crisis, experts have urged the public to enhance preventive measures.

Among the main causes of wildfires in the region are uncontrolled agricultural burning, discarding lit cigarette butts on rural paths, poaching in wooded areas, and the operation of vehicles without spark arresters.

The increase in wildfires, amid a backdrop of drought and extreme weather, puts authorities on alert and highlights poor management of natural resources.

A panorama of growing concern

As the flames continue to spread, Pinar del Río is facing one of the most difficult challenges of the season.

The region, known for its abundant natural wealth, is witnessing the loss of its most valuable resources due to inaction and a lack of resources to effectively combat fires.

The community, both in the province and across the rest of the country, is closely monitoring the development of the situation, as the authorities attempt to extinguish the largest fire of the year, aware that the coming hours will be crucial to prevent a greater disaster
