Russian tourists report violent assault in Havana

The thieves repeatedly assaulted the young women and managed to take one of their purses, which contained cash, personal documents, and her passport.

What started as a dream vacation in Cuba turned into a nightmare for two young Russian tourists who were brutally assaulted during a visit to the capital.

The violent incident, which took place in the streets of Old Havana, adds to a growing concern for the safety of foreign visitors on the Island.

The victims, identified by Russian media only as Olga and her friend, had arrived in Cuba with the intention of enjoying a 12-day stay in Varadero, one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

According to reports, they paid around 360,000 rubles for accommodation in a hotel at the resort and later booked a private excursion to Havana, valued at 250 dollars per person.

The package included transportation, accommodations in an apartment, and a tour guide who assured them that they were not at any risk, either during the day or at night.

However, the reality was very different.

During a sunset walk through the colorful yet increasingly unprotected streets of Old Havana, both girls were intercepted by two unknown men wearing dark glasses who attempted to snatch their belongings.

They resisted the assault and tried to defend themselves, which provoked a physical attack from the thieves, who repeatedly beat them before fleeing with the bag of one of the victims, which contained cash, documents, and her passport.

Despite the cries for help—reported the affected individuals—no passerby intervened, and there were also no police in the area.

With visible wounds and in a state of shock, they returned to the lodging, where -according to their testimony- they did not receive assistance from the staff to address their injuries or guidance on how to report the incident.

Due to the theft of her passport, Olga had to arrange for a special exit certificate to be able to leave Cuba and return to Russia.

Back in her country, the young woman is relieved to have survived. Her experience has led her to offer advice to anyone planning to vacation on the Island: take a taxi from place to place, carry only a minimal amount of valuables, and speak with locals only when necessary.

The case was initially reported by the Telegram channel SHOT and raised alarm among Russian users who view Cuba as a traditionally safe tourist destination.

Increasing insecurity

The incident has reignited concerns about the growing insecurity that some tourists perceive in Cuba's tourist areas, particularly in Havana.

Although Cuban authorities insist that the country remains one of the safest destinations in Latin America, reports of theft, assaults, and scams targeting tourists have risen in recent years, particularly with the worsening of the economic crisis the Island is experiencing.

As of now, there has been no official statement regarding the identification or arrest of those responsible for the attack. The Russian embassy in Cuba has also remained silent on the incident, although local Russian media report that the victims are already out of the country and in good health, though deeply affected by what happened.

The episode has sparked outrage on social media, where users are demanding greater protection for tourists and questioning the preparedness and response of authorities to such crimes.

For now, Olga and her friend can only hope to leave the trauma behind and regain their peace of mind, although they admit that their perception of Cuba has changed forever.
