Mike Hammer, head of the United States Mission in Cuba, met this Sunday with Juan Alberto de la Nuez, an opposition figure who was recently attacked in Cienfuegos.
"In Cienfuegos, we visited Juan Alberto de la Nuez, who was recently brutally attacked. Despite his serious condition, he wanted to receive me at his home along with his brother Bárbaro de la Nuez. They are asking for justice in his case and for the rights of all Cubans to be respected," said in the X from the Embassy this Sunday.
Juan Alberto de la Nuez Ramírez, a Cuban opposition member residing in the municipality of Aguada de Pasajeros, was recently stabbed and, despite the severity of the attack, his assailants were released by the police.
The opposition member identified his attackers and notified the authorities, but the state response has been silence and impunity.
The situation becomes even more concerning following the revelation that the file containing statements related to the case has disappeared, as reported by the opposition lawyer herself.
As part of his intention to get to know Cuba, Hammer has recently engaged in intensive activity across several provinces in the central part of the island.
These visits by the head of the U.S. Mission in Cuba are part of a series of meetings initiated by Hammer since his arrival in Havana, where he has held discussions with both ordinary citizens and activists and opponents, such as José Daniel Ferrer, Guillermo Fariñas, and Martha Beatriz Roque.
I want to speak with anyone who wants to share their perspectives, Hammer recently stated, emphasizing the importance of listening directly to the Cuban people.
His presence in iconic places such as the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre and his willingness to engage in face-to-face dialogue with Cubans from various spheres has sparked both interest and discomfort from the Cuban regime, which has accused him of interference in internal affairs.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, accused Hammer of acting like "an activist who encourages Cubans to act against their country," justifying repressive measures as a defense against a "hostile foreign power."
This week, the diplomat also met with independent journalists and members of civil society in Camagüey.
On Thursday, the diplomat visited independent journalists from La Hora de Cuba, Henry Constantín and Iris Mariño. That same day, he was photographed in the municipality of Esmeralda alongside the regime critic priest Alberto Reyes.
On Friday, the diplomat held a meeting with a group of entrepreneurs from that area.
