A Cuban citizen was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison in Spain, for attempting to sexually assault a domestic worker, whom he injured with a knife when she resisted being raped and stole the money she had in her wallet.
The attack occurred around noon on July 28, 2022, when the woman was leaving the house where she worked, in the municipality of Aspe, Alicante, in the Community of Valencia, local media reported.
At that moment, the man confronted her with a large kitchen knife (about 20 centimeters) and forced her to enter the house again, where he attempted to assault her.
The victim resisted, prompting her attacker to stab her in the arm and steal 140 euros from her handbag before fleeing the scene and threatening her if she reported the incident, according to the ruling from the Alicante Court.
After the alarm raised by the woman's relatives, the Civil Guard's Judicial Police arrested the Cuban on July 29 near his home in Aspe, where the knife and the clothes he was wearing when he committed the assault, stained with blood, were found, as reported by the news portal Información.
In his statement during the trial held on May 5 in the Second Section of the Alicante Court, the accused, 38 years old and with a criminal record for a similar offense, acknowledged his involvement in the events, following an agreement reached with the prosecution and the legal representation of the victim.
The court found him guilty of a crime of attempted sexual assault, for which he was sentenced to five years and six months in prison. Additionally, he received another two years of imprisonment for the crime of robbery with violence and two more years of deprivation of liberty for assault with a dangerous weapon.
It also ruled that he must compensate the victim with 38,000 euros (42,200 dollars) for the damages caused.
The Cuban, identified by the initials R.P.A., had already been sentenced in 2017 by the Alicante Court to four and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting another woman.
The events for which he was accused took place on June 27, 2016, when he broke into the home of his victim, whom he only knew by sight, and attempted to force her to perform oral sex. The woman managed to escape and call for help from her neighbors.
The court in Alicante determined that two-thirds of the sentence should be served, with the remaining third replaced by the expulsion of the convicted individual from Spain, as they did not have legal residency in the country.
The sentence was upheld by the Spanish Supreme Court in 2018, and it was served in 2021. However, shortly after being released from prison, he reoffended.
Following his arrest in July 2022, the digital platform Información revealed that the Cuban citizen has been in Spain for two decades, in an “itinerant” manner; he has been residing in Aspe at least since 2009, according to one of his criminal records; and he holds a residence permit.
He also stated that "he lives alone in a house without electricity, and he has no known occupation or family."
