The Cuban film “Plantadas”, co-directed by Lilo Vilaplana, was awarded two honors this Saturday at the Cannes Film Awards, as confirmed by the director himself through social media.

According to the event website, the film won awards for Best American Film and Human Rights, thus expanding its international accolades to seven recognitions at festivals outside of Cuba.

“Thanks to everyone who made this film possible, which was achieved with the support of the exile community. Thank you all,” wrote Vilaplana on his Facebook profile when announcing the results of the competition.

“Plantadas” tells, from a testimonial and denunciatory perspective, the story of several women incarcerated in Cuba for political reasons during the early decades of the revolutionary regime.

The film, which has been largely promoted and financed by the Cuban exile community, has had a successful run at international film festivals and exhibitions.

The recognition in the Human Rights category emphasizes the denunciatory nature of the work, focused on political repression, the suffering of prisoners, and women's resistance in contexts of oppression.

In May, the film "Plantadas" was honored with the Best Direction award at the South Beach Film Festival, as reported by Vilaplana on his social media.

With that distinction, "Plantadas" had garnered five awards at various international festivals by that moment, establishing itself as a reference work in social commentary cinema regarding repression in Cuba.

In 2023, "Plantadas" was awarded at the Miami International Film Festival, where it shared the Knight Made in MIA award with "Febrero", standing out for its committed approach and its narrative on the historical memory of the Cuban exile.

Since last March, filmmaker Vilaplana has been organizing a fundraising campaign for his upcoming movie about the Military Units for Production Assistance (UMAP), the sadly infamous forced labor camps that Fidel Castro's regime used in the 1960s to imprison political opponents, religious individuals, homosexuals, and anyone deemed "unfit" for communist society.
