A private truck suffered a serious overturn on the morning of Saturday, March 1, on the National Highway of Cuba, near the entrance to the municipality of Taguasco in the province of Sancti Spíritus.
According to preliminary reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn onto one of its sides on the road. The exact causes of the incident are still unknown, although witnesses suggest it may have been due to a mechanical failure or a sudden maneuver.
Images of the accident shared on the profile of Facebook ‘La Tijera’ showed how several pedestrians and drivers from other vehicles stopped to try to assist the individuals trapped in the truck's cabin. Some of them climbed onto the vehicle to help facilitate the exit of the occupants.
So far, there is no official information regarding the health status of the driver and potential passengers, although internet users mentioned in the comments that no one was injured in the accident.
This incident adds to a series of traffic accidents that have occurred in Cuba in recent months, many of which involve heavy cargo vehicles.
In mid-February, a truck overturned on the Central Highway, near the province of Camagüey, for reasons that have not been disclosed. Fortunately, despite the serious accident, which was captured by a security camera installed in the area, there were no reported injuries, although there was material damage, according to a report on social media.
The incident occurred in front of the CUPET on the Central Highway, at the exit of the city of Camagüey, near the Imán neighborhood and the liquefied gas bottling plant.
At the end of January, a truck with a container had an accident and ended up overturned on a bridge in Havana. The incident occurred on the highway to Pinar del Río and 114th Avenue, according to reports on social media. Internet users mentioned that there were no injuries, only material damages, although it is unclear whether the vehicle was carrying cargo.
Days earlier, a collision between two trucks left one of them overturned on the road connecting the province of Las Tunas with Camagüey. Fortunately, there were no reported loss of life, and thick fog was indicated as the cause of the accident.
Around the same time, a truck transporting chicken overturned in the area of Río Piedras, in the municipality of Guanabacoa, near the intersection of Monumental and the Santa María del Rosario Highway.
Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the cargo remained intact. The vehicle, a Freightliner with license plate B092299, was overturned on its left side, partially blocking the roadway. It is speculated that speeding and road conditions may have contributed to the accident.
On December 14, 2024, a truck loaded with goods overturned in Antilla, a municipality in Holguín, and crashed into an electricity pole next to a warehouse.
In the vehicle were the driver and three other people carrying products to sell at the local fair. One of the passengers had to be taken to the hospital in Banes, and according to comments on social media, he was recovering.
On December 6th, a truck overturned in Loma de Rejondones, in the municipality of Báguanos, province of Holguín. Although there were no human casualties, the vehicle sustained considerable damage.
Witnesses reported that the truck, whose occupants were from the province of Artemisa, overturned while descending one of the more challenging slopes of the road. The area is known for its steep inclines and sharp curves, making it a dangerous stretch for drivers.
One day later, in the same stretch of Loma de Rejondones, another truck accident occurred, resulting in the vehicle overturning, leading to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five other occupants.
At the end of November, a trailer overturned on the Central Highway near Ciego de Ávila. Fortunately, both the driver and their passenger were unharmed, and only material damages occurred.
The vehicle, identified as "the wedge of the Marreritos," was transporting a refrigerated container that tipped over on the road. The accident caused extensive congestion on the Carretera Central.
Two days before this event, a modern truck, allegedly leased by the Cuban beer factory Tínima, suffered an accident and ended up overturned on a road in Camagüey.
The incident was reported on social media, where images and videos from the scene were shared. Apparently, the accident only resulted in material damage, as the two occupants of the vehicle were unharmed. It is unclear whether the vehicle was carrying cargo at the time of the accident.
These incidents reflect a troubling trend on Cuban roads, where factors such as poor road conditions, vehicle wear, and, at times, reckless driving contribute to the occurrence of traffic accidents.
