The early morning of this Wednesday was notably cold in several areas of the interior of the provinces of Mayabeque and Artemisa, with minimum temperatures dropping to 7.5 degrees Celsius in Bainoa, according to reports from the national network of meteorological stations.
The meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez explained on Facebook that this significant drop in temperatures, unusual for this time of year, was primarily due to weak winds, clear skies, and stable atmospheric conditions during the night.
Bainoa, known as one of the coldest areas in Cuba, recorded the lowest temperature at 7.5 °C, while other nearby locations also experienced temperatures below 11 degrees.
Ruisánchez emphasized that the temperatures ranged between 11 and 14 °C in the province of Artemisa, while in Mayabeque they fluctuated between 8 and 11 °C.
For its part, the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) reported that the cold and dry air mass, combined with weak winds and strong nighttime radiation, caused particularly low temperatures in various regions of the interior of western and central Cuba.
The Indio Hatuey station in Matanzas recorded 8.3 °C, followed by Santo Domingo in Villa Clara with 9.6 °C and José Martí International Airport in Havana with 10.3 °C. Other locations with low temperatures included Güines (10.8 °C), Bauta (10.8 °C), Jovellanos (11.4 °C), and Sagua La Grande (11.5 °C).
The advancement of a cold front over western Cuba has caused intense rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly impacting Havana. According to the Meteorology Institute, this phenomenon has led to significant precipitation, strong winds, and high waves along the northern coast.
As a result of these weather conditions, the Provincial Transport Company of Havana announced the suspension of the Regla ferry service. This measure aims to ensure the safety of passengers, as the Bay of Havana is experiencing adverse conditions for navigation. Citizens have been advised to use land transportation while the service is being restored.
In various parts of Havana, intense rains have caused flooding, particularly in areas like Alamar and Reparto Bahía. Users on social media have reported flooded streets, disruptions in transportation, and difficulties in mobility. In some cases, water has even entered public transport vehicles, further complicating traffic flow.
The Civil Defense has issued a warning to inform the public about the dangers of walking in flooded areas, noting that accumulated water can hide open drains and create hazardous currents. It is advised to avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary and to follow the instructions of the authorities.
In light of the persistence of this frontal system, authorities are urging citizens to stay informed through official channels and to take precautions in anticipation of more rain and storms in the coming days.
