Two Cuban women arrested in Centro Habana for drug dealing

The two arrested individuals had criminal records.

Two women were arrested this week in the Colón neighborhood of the Centro Habana municipality after being reported by neighbors for allegedly engaging in drug sales in the area.

According to information shared by the official Facebook profile "Frank Enrique", the accused, both female and with criminal records, were intercepted by authorities in the vicinity of the popular El Curita park, where they were operating.

It is reported that the suspects were involved in the trafficking of the synthetic cannabinoid known as "the chemical", a high-risk drug that is particularly affecting an increasingly broad segment of Cuban youth.

The detainees, originally from Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, were living in the area illegally, apparently renting clandestinely, without being officially registered as residents of the municipality.

Residents of the Colón neighborhood, concerned about the rising insecurity, alerted the authorities about the suspicious activities of those involved, which facilitated the intervention of law enforcement.

"Let the weight of the law fall upon them", concluded the publication, in a call for severe sanctions to be imposed on those who reoffend in these types of crimes.

The case generated divided reactions on social media; while the majority applauded the arrests, others urged to go further and also address the social roots that fuel these kinds of phenomena in vulnerable sectors of the city.

In recent months, the Cuban government has intensified its campaign against drug trafficking on the island, a phenomenon that has worsened and reached unprecedented levels in recent years, corresponding with the deepening of the economic and social crisis in the country.

Although the main traffic and consumption in recent months is of the drug known as "el químico," there is also marijuana, crack, and other drugs.

In March, a police operation in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood, also located in the Centro Habana municipality, resulted in the arrest of a citizen from Cienfuegos for alleged drug trafficking, among which crack, a powerful derivative of cocaine, was discovered.

On the other hand, this week Cuban authorities discovered an illegal marijuana plantation with over 1,200 plants in the municipality of Bayamo, Granma province, in one of the largest reported cases of clandestine drug cultivation on the island.
