Storms will batter the east and center of Cuba: Extreme caution is advised

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast for this Tuesday in eastern and central Cuba. Caution is advised, especially in Camagüey, Granma, Santiago, and Guantánamo.

Intense rainfall and thunderstorms will affect several provinces in the east and center of Cuba this Tuesday, particularly in the interior and southern regions from Camagüey to Guantánamo.

The warning was shared by Cuban meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez, who explained that this situation is supported by both global and local scale models.

Through a post on social media, Ruisánchez advised the public to exercise caution during thunderstorms, due to their dangerous nature and potential severe effects in vulnerable environments.

In addition, he emphasized that, in the west, events will be more isolated and will focus on inland and northern areas.

The meteorologist himself recently warned that the first tropical wave of the season would be moving through the Caribbean, south of Cuba, and causing a significant increase in rainfall and thunderstorms in the country.

As warned on his Facebook profile, this system, combined with the strong daytime heating, local factors, and a cyclonic circulation in the upper levels of the atmosphere, will increase the activity of showers, rain, and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon hours.

The specialist emphasized that an increase in rainfall is expected starting this Tuesday in the eastern region, with a possible extension to the rest of the country in the following days.

Ruisánchez also indicated that they will be monitoring the evolution of the system, as well as the potential occurrence of intense rainfall and even severe storms, phenomena that are common during this stage of the rainy season in Cuba.

This new episode of atmospheric instability occurs just hours after a low-intensity tornado was reported on Sunday near José Martí International Airport in Havana.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its official forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, warning that it will be an “above-average” season, with a high probability of significant storms.

The report, presented at a press conference just days before the official start of the season (which runs from June 1 to November 30), estimates the formation of between 13 and 19 named storms, of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes, and between 3 and 5 would reach major category (category 3 or higher).

NOAA attributes this forecast to several key climatic factors: warmer-than-normal surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Caribbean; a neutral phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which does not inhibit cyclone development as an active El Niño would; and a more intense West African monsoon, which can generate more tropical waves—the "seeds" that often develop into hurricanes.
